Skeptic Reader

A plug-in to detect online bias and flawed logic

In an era where misinformation spreads faster than ever, how can we maintain a critical eye within the vast media landscape that we face today? This was the main question that led us to build Skeptic Reader, a tool that could empower, and not replace, our ability to discern fact from fiction when navigating the news. Designed as a free plugin for Chrome and Firefox, this tool integrates seamlessly with your browsing experience to analyze online content in real-time.

Through its analysis of rhetoric, bias patterns, and missing context, Skeptic Reader helps you make informed decisions while encouraging you to think critically about the news you’re reading or watching. Each Skeptic Reader report provides the four following key features:

  • Bias Detection
Skeptic Reader analyzes content to highlight implicit biases, scrutinizing language, tone, and cited sources for neutrality and diversity. It reveals omitted perspectives, empowering you to assess credibility comprehensively.
  • Logical Fallacy Identification
The plugin identifies common logical fallacies, such as straw man arguments, slippery slopes, and appeals to emotion. Each fallacy is clearly explained, detailing its impact on the argument's validity.
  • Counter-Argument Generation
Skeptic Reader offers diverse counterarguments, presenting alternative perspectives to encourage nuanced understanding and balanced debates.
  • Scoring Metrics
For every analyzed piece, Skeptic Reader assigns scores for balance, logical coherence, and objectivity. These metrics are presented with concise summaries, helping you quickly gauge content quality.

Expanding beyond written news content, Skeptic Reader can also evaluate YouTube transcripts. It’s thus able to detect biases and fallacies in video content too, offering the same rigorous analysis available for articles. Ultimately, each analysis, whether video or article, delivers upon a wealth of educational insights, transforming media consumption into a learning experience, through the goal of equipping users with the tools to question, verify, and understand information.

How It Works

As a browser plugin, it’s possible to run Skeptic Reader at any point while browsing the internet, and it quickly operates in the background, analyzing the current piece of media: highlighting dubious claims, biased statements, and gaps in information. It provides clear annotations and suggestions for further reading, making every interaction a step toward media literacy. It’s compatible with most main media news sites, in all languages and from across the globe.

We made sure to make Skeptic Reader accessible to all, so it's very easy to set up: you can just go to the Chrome Web Store or the Firefox Add-Ons page (depending on which browser you use), and add it for free. All you need to do is make sure the Skeptic Reader extension appears in your browser toolbar, so that when you're reading through an article or watching a video, you can simply click on the Skeptic Reader icon in the toolbar, and it automatically launches an accuracy analysis.

A Collaborative Experiment

Skeptic Reader was created by the AI division of Domestic Data Streamers, as a fusion between machine learning, design thinking, and journalistic principles. The project harnesses cutting-edge AI technologies (GPT-4o, in particular) while incorporating design elements to make complex analyses accessible and engaging. Above all, Skeptic Reader is meant to be a collaborative, experimental project - inviting users to interact with the plugin, share insights about detected misinformation patterns, all while contributing to a global initiative against misinformation.

Vision for the Future

Ultimately, the goal behind Skeptic Reader is to establish a culture of critical thinking and digital literacy worldwide. Given the growing and diverse complexity of the world and media, we’ve got future iterations of Skeptic Reader in the pipeline - expanding compatibility across languages, platforms, and media formats. The tool welcomes concerned citizens, educators, and researchers to join in fostering a more informed digital media consumption - nurturing a habit of skepticism and questioning, which we deem absolutely necessary in today’s media landscape.
